The Cleveland Bay is England's oldest established horse breed, originating in the Cleveland district of north Yorkshire in the 17th century. Always bay (no white markings beyond a small star and faint heel marks permitted by the standard), strong-boned, and historically the prized British coach horse before motorised transport ended the trade. Today the breed survives through dedicated conservation: a riding and driving horse with the Royal Mews still keeping a small ceremonial team.
The Rare Breeds Survival Trust lists the Cleveland Bay as Priority on its 2024 Watchlist — fewer than 300 active breeding mares worldwide, and the breed has been designated critical for decades. The Cleveland Bay Horse Society maintains the studbook from its base in Yorkshire. Buying a Cleveland Bay is partly a conservation decision; gifting one is partly a recognition of that.
