Horse memorial gifts.
Losing a horse leaves a particular kind of grief. Years of yard mornings, the sound of hooves on the concrete, the bond no one outside the stable quite understands — gone in a day. There's rarely a card that fits.
A memorial gift acknowledges the relationship rather than tries to fix the loss. The pieces below are what we make most often for owners or yard friends after a horse has died: a portrait canvas of the horse from a photo, or a name print listing their breed and yard. Made-to-order, sent in plain packaging without a printed invoice on the outside, and we'll handle correspondence sensitively if you need anything customised. How to order a memorial gift
Orders are placed the same way as any other product. Upload the horse's photo at checkout for a portrait canvas, or enter the name and breed for a print or mug. The only difference is that the horse whose details you enter is no longer alive — the order process is identical and the product is the same.
We handle memorial orders with discretion. Correspondence is careful and unhurried. If you need to make changes after ordering — the horse's name has a detail you want to adjust, the yard name should read slightly differently — email us and we will sort it before printing. If the portrait generation does not capture the horse as you remember them, we regenerate until you are satisfied.
The portrait canvas vs the name print for a memorial gift
Both products serve the same role — keeping the horse's presence in the space — but in different ways. The portrait canvas shows the horse: their face, their expression, their markings. It is the stronger piece for a horse whose loss is recent and whose physical presence is what the owner misses. It requires a good photo. If the best photos were taken on a phone in a stable years ago, in flat light, the generation quality may be limited — we will tell you before printing.
The name print does not require a photo. It shows the horse's name, breed, colour, and yard in editorial typography. For horses who have been gone longer, or for owners who find a photographic representation emotionally harder to live with daily, the name print is often the right choice. Several buyers have ordered both over the years after a loss — the print went up first, the portrait came later.
Gifting a memorial piece to someone else
A meaningful use case for memorial gifts: giving them to the owner of the horse rather than ordering for yourself. A friend who has lost a horse, a partner who grew up with a pony that died years ago, a yard owner whose horse of fifteen years has just been put down. The gift arrives in plain packaging without a printed invoice, so it can be given directly. Memorial pieces tend to carry more weight when given rather than self-bought — the act of someone else marking the loss matters.
For a gift to someone else: you need the horse's name and breed (usually easy to know if you knew the horse), and a recent photo for the canvas (harder to obtain without asking). The name print is the safe choice when the photo is not available.
Packaging and presentation for memorial orders
All orders arrive in standard production packaging: prints flat-packed in a rigid-backed kraft mailer, canvases in a protective outer box. There is no printed invoice inside the parcel unless you request one — standard fulfilment is a dispatch note only.
If you would like a handwritten note included, or specific packing instructions, email us after placing the order. We can usually accommodate small customisation requests on memorial orders at no extra cost.
Horse remembrance and keepsake gifts
People search for this gift in a dozen different ways — horse memorial gifts, horse remembrance gifts, in memory of horse gifts, horse loss gifts, a horse keepsake. They all describe the same need: something that keeps the horse present after they have gone. A portrait canvas or name print is the version we make; both work as a personal keepsake or as a sympathy gift given to someone else who has lost a horse.
If you want a physical keepsake that holds something of the horse — a lock of mane or tail — we don't make hair-set jewellery ourselves, but a printed portrait pairs naturally with one. Many owners keep the canvas on the wall and a small keepsake box nearby. For the gift given in sympathy rather than ordered for yourself, the name print in plain packaging is the gentlest way to mark the loss.
Common questions
№ 04 questions№ 01 What's the best horse memorial gift?
For a recent loss, the framed portrait canvas is the gift most people end up keeping on the wall — it makes the horse present without being a constant reminder of the death. The name print is the lighter option that fits a tack-room or memorial corner.
№ 02 Can I personalise the gift?
Every gift on the page is personalised — your horse's name, breed, and yard go onto the print, mug, tote, t-shirt, phone case, or portrait canvas. The personalisation is set at checkout.
№ 03 How long does delivery take?
Tier A products (prints, mugs, totes, tshirts, phone cases) ship within 2–5 working days in the UK. Portrait canvases take 7–10 working days end to end because we generate the artwork before printing.
№ 04 Do you ship outside the UK?
Yes — Ireland and the United States. Costs and timings calculated at checkout. EU and worldwide on request — email hello@stableandhoof.com.
