Dressage arena letters

Pick the arena size to see every letter in order, exactly where each one sits in metres, and how far apart any two are. Then print a plan to scale.

Where is each letter?

A K E H C M B F

The outside letters of the 20 x 40 metres (the small arena), clockwise from A as you ride in. A to X is 20 m in a straight line.

LetterWhere it sits
AMiddle of the A end (the entry)
DOn the centre line, 6 m from A
KLeft long side, 6 m from the A end, 34 m from the C end
FRight long side, 6 m from the A end, 34 m from the C end
XOn the centre line, 20 m from A
ELeft long side, 20 m from the A end, 20 m from the C end
BRight long side, 20 m from the A end, 20 m from the C end
GOn the centre line, 34 m from A
HLeft long side, 34 m from the A end, 6 m from the C end

The letters stand just outside the boards.

The plan prints on A4 to scale, with a line that should measure 50 mm so you can check the printer kept the size. We don't save what you type.

The small arena: 20 x 40 metres

Your Horse says this is the size "At the lower levels of dressage and eventing". It lists the letters "Starting at A and working clockwise": "A, K, E, H, C, M, B and F". "The corner letters of a dressage arena are 6m away from the corner. There is 14m between each letter on the long side", and A and C sit in the middle of the short ends.

Down the middle are letters you won't see on a board. Riding in from A, you pass D, then X, then G. D is level with K and F, G is level with H and M, and X is in the centre, level with E and B.

The standard arena: 20 x 60 metres

The FEI Dressage Rules say the arena "must be sixty meters (60 m) long and twenty meters (20 m) wide". Their plan puts the corner letters 6 m in, then a letter every 12 m. Clockwise from A, the letters are A, K, V, E, S, H, C, M, R, B, P and F. The centre line gains L and I, so it runs D, L, X, I, G.

The FEI rules also say the letters stand "about fifty centimetres (50 cm) from the fence".

Printing the plan

The plan prints at 1:250, so every 4 mm on the paper is a metre in the arena. A 20 x 60 arena comes out 240 mm long and fits on A4. Each sheet has a line that should measure 50 mm, which is 12.5 m in the arena; if it doesn't, set your printer to actual size. Add a title, such as a test name, and use it to learn a test away from the horse.
