An eventer over a log fence, in watercolour
Cross Country catches a chestnut eventer at full stretch over a solid log-and-brush fence, rider in a green silk and body protector, turf and mud flying from the landing side. Spectators lean on the rope behind, and the sky is a wash of blue and grey. The watercolour is lively and loose, with splashes of paint thrown across the grass like the mud itself.
It is made for the eventing household: the rider who walks every course twice, the parent who has stood at the water jump in the rain, the friend who never misses Badminton or Burghley. It also suits a Pony Club team room. The upright shape fits a hallway or a landing, and it reads well at a distance, so it can go large: 50x70 cm on a framed canvas is a fair choice.
