A foal and its dam in a spring meadow
Foal in Spring shows a chestnut foal with a white blaze standing close against its mother in a meadow full of buttercups and daisies, with blossom on the hedge behind. The foal is all legs and fluff, the mare bends her head towards it, and the watercolour is fresh and bright: grass green, buttercup yellow and the warm red of a chestnut coat.
It is the most cheerful picture in the collection, and the one people choose for a child’s bedroom, a nursery or a kitchen that gets the morning sun. It also suits a breeder, a stud, or an owner whose mare has just foaled, and it makes a gentle present for Mothering Sunday. As a mug it is the bright one on the shelf; framed at A3 it lightens a dark hallway. The palette is light enough to hang beside white or pale wood furniture without a mount.
