A chestnut mare in the manner of a sporting oil
The Chestnut Mare is a head-and-shoulders portrait in the tradition of the British sporting painters: a chestnut with a long white blaze, turned slightly away, her coat picked out in mahogany, copper and cream against a warm ochre ground. There is no saddle, no rider and no background story. The whole picture is the horse, which is why it works in a room that already has a lot going on.
It suits the person who grew up with a chestnut, or who simply prefers a horse painted the old way. The tall shape fits a narrow wall beside a door or a fireplace, and the dark edges sit well in a black or dark wood frame. At A3 it holds a hallway; at 50x70 cm on canvas it can carry a dining room.
If the person you are buying for owns a chestnut of their own, the same look is available from their photo: the oil style is one of five on the custom horse portrait.
