A horse at the paddock gate, in summer watercolour
The Paddock Gate is the moment every owner knows from the walk down the field: a chestnut with a flaxen mane hanging its head over a five-bar wooden gate, ears forward, waiting to see what you have brought. Behind it a summer meadow runs to a red barn with a green roof and a line of trees. The watercolour is warm and clear, in grass green, chestnut and sky blue.
It is a friendly picture and an easy one to give. It suits a horse lover who does not own a horse, a child who has just started lessons, a sharer, or a family that keeps a pony at the bottom of the garden. It fits a kitchen, a playroom or a downstairs loo with equal ease, and as a canvas it brings summer into a dark room. In a pale oak or natural wood frame the green of the meadow looks its best.
