A stable yard in early light, in watercolour
The Stable Yard looks along a timber-framed stone stable block on an early morning. A chestnut leans over a green half-door, a hay net hangs beside it, a green bucket waits on its hook and the cobbles run past an open box towards an archway. Ivy climbs the wall. The watercolour is loose and bright, with long shadows and plenty of white paper left showing.
It is the picture for anyone who knows that the best part of keeping a horse happens before nine in the morning: the owner on full DIY livery, the groom, the yard manager. It also works for a family whose child has just started riding, because it shows the yard and not the competition. Hang it in a kitchen, a boot room or a tack room; on wood the grain shows faintly through the pale areas and suits a rural house.
For a yard manager who is moving on, it makes a fitting leaving gift for a stable manager.
