Two horses grazing at sunset, in oils
Two in the Field shows a bay and a chestnut with a flaxen mane grazing side by side in long grass as the sun goes down behind a line of oaks. A track winds away across the field, and the light turns everything gold. The oil painting has the feel of an English landscape picture: warm, still and slightly old-fashioned.
Horses are herd animals, and two together is how most of them would choose to spend the evening. That makes it a good picture for an owner with a pair, for a horse that has retired to grass with a companion, and for a gift after a loss when a portrait of the horse itself would be too much. It suits a sitting room or a dining room and looks best framed, in black or natural wood, at 40x50 cm or larger so the sky has room.
Why company matters is explained in will a single horse get lonely?
