A morning hack through the woods, in oils
Morning Hack follows a rider on a dark bay walking away from us down a woodland track. Low sun comes through the trees in a golden haze, the ground is damp and the leaves are turning. There is no fence and no rosette: just a horse on a loose rein and a long way to go before breakfast. The oil palette is gold, olive and a soft brown shadow.
Most riders spend far more time hacking than competing, and this is their picture. It suits the happy hacker, the rider on a loan horse, the person who came back to riding later in life, and anyone retiring a horse to lighter work. The warm tones suit a sitting room or a bedroom; on canvas, the light in the trees glows.
It sits well beside Two in the Field, painted in the same golden light, and it is a fitting picture for retirement gifts for horse riders.
