The farrier at the anvil, in charcoal
The Farrier is drawn in charcoal with a wash of forge red behind. A farrier in a leather apron bends over the anvil, shaping a shoe with his hammer, while a tall grey horse stands patiently beside him in its headcollar. Tongs and rasps hang on the wall, the anvil sits on a tree-stump block, and the fire glows in the corner.
It is a working picture, and it suits working people: a farrier, a blacksmith, an apprentice who has just qualified, or the owner who has spent a lot of Tuesday mornings holding a horse for one. Britain’s farriers are a registered profession, and a picture of the craft makes a good thank-you after years of good feet. Hang it in a workshop, a study or a boot room; as a framed print it looks like a drawing from an old trade book.
The craft is explained on how to pick out a hoof.
