The tack room by lamplight, in an oil style
The Tack Room is a still life with no horse in it. A well-used saddle sits on its rack, bridles hang from iron hooks, three rosettes in red, blue and cream are pinned to the timber wall, and an oil lamp throws a warm light over brushes, tins of leather balm and a pair of boots on the floor. The palette is leather brown, brass and the deep shadow of an old wooden room.
It suits the person who cleans their own tack and knows what a room like this smells like. It is a good choice for an owner whose horse has died or retired, when a picture of a horse would be too close, and for a riding club or a yard office where nobody’s horse should be singled out. The warm darks need a light wall; a natural wood print or a framed canvas works best, from 40x50 cm up.
Its natural partner is The Loose Box, painted in the same warm oils.
