Pony gifts

The best pony gift for a pony-mad child is their pony, by name: on a print for the bedroom wall, on a mug, or as a portrait from a photo. Every piece is made to order.

Four Shetland ponies, black, chestnut, piebald and grey, sheltering together by a stone wall in the wind.

A child who loves ponies usually loves one pony in particular. It might be their own, a share pony at the yard, or the riding school pony they ask for every Saturday. A gift with that pony’s name on it shows you were listening, which a pony-print pencil case from the shops can’t.

Three ways to make it their pony

  • The name print. The pony’s name in large type, with its breed, yard or year underneath if you want them. No photo is needed, so it works for a riding school pony you have never seen.
  • The photo print. A photo you or the child took, printed as it is. Each size is checked against the photo first, so you are only shown the sizes it can fill.
  • The portrait. The same photo redrawn in a painted style, such as watercolour or pop art. A watermarked preview shows on screen, free, before any payment.

Pony gifts for a child’s bedroom

For a bedroom wall, an A4 or A3 print is the right size: big enough to read from the bed, small enough for a child’s wall. Younger children tend to love the name print most, because it is their pony’s name and they can read it. A mug with the pony’s name suits an older child who comes in from a cold morning at the yard wanting a hot chocolate.

Gifts for Pony Club members

The Pony Club has a ladder of tests that members work up through, starting with the E test, which is recommended from the age of four, then D, C and B, up to the A test at the top. Each one takes months of work, so passing one is a good moment for a gift. A name print with the pony’s name and the year marks it without any fuss. Pony Club camp in the summer, a first rally and a first rosette are the other times a child comes home full of one pony.

When the pony isn’t theirs

Plenty of pony-mad children don’t own a pony. They ride at a riding school or share one at a yard, and that pony matters to them just as much. The name print is made for this, because all you need is the name, and the child will tell you that without being asked. Check the spelling with the yard if you can. If the child later moves on to a bigger pony, the print stays as a record of the first one.

Pony gifts for grown-ups

Pony gifts aren’t only for children. Lots of adults keep a native pony, and our guides to the Welsh pony, the Shetland and the New Forest pony cover the breeds you see most on British yards. For adults who ride, gifts for horse riders has more ideas.

Questions, answered

What do you buy a pony-mad child?
Something with their pony's name on it. A name print for the bedroom wall needs only the name, a mug suits an older child, and a portrait needs one clear photo of the pony.
Can I buy a pony gift without a photo?
Yes. The name print needs only the pony's name, with its breed, yard or year if you want them. You need a photo only for the photo print and the portrait.
What size print suits a child's bedroom?
A4 or A3. Both are big enough to read from across the room and small enough for a child's wall, and A4 is the smallest print size.
