The American Quarter Horse is the most-registered breed on earth, and the build tells you why it's so useful: a compact, deeply muscled frame, a powerful hindquarter, low-set centre of gravity, and an explosive standing start. The name comes from sprinting the quarter mile faster than anything else, but the everyday value is cow sense: the instinctive read of cattle that makes the breed the backbone of Western performance, from reining and cutting to ranch work and trail. It's a horse bred to think on its feet at speed and then stand quietly the rest of the day.

In Britain the population is comparatively small but distinct, clustered around Western riding clubs and the disciplines that come with them rather than English-style showing.
