Gifts for KWPN owners

KWPN (Koninklijk Warmbloed Paardenstamboek Nederland) is the Dutch national sport horse studbook, organised into four breeding directions: Showjumping, Dressage, Gelders (traditional Dutch all-rounder), and Harness. The crowned-lion brand sits on the left side of the neck; horses are graded through linear scoring at keuringen (grading shows) and earn predicates as they progress.

The KWPN predicate ladder is part of the horse's identity: Stamboek (basic studbook), Keur (above-average dam-line quality), Ster (good conformation), Prok (proven sport mare line), Sport, Prestatie, and Elite at the top. KWPN-UK runs UK keuringen each summer with KWPN judges flown in from the Netherlands. The predicate ladder is the horse's CV

KWPN (the Dutch national studbook) organises its breeding into directions (showjumping, dressage, the traditional Gelders type, and harness) and brands the crowned lion on the left of the neck. But the thing that genuinely defines a KWPN horse to its owner is the predicate ladder. A horse climbs a published sequence of earned titles (Stamboek, Ster, Keur, Prok, Sport, Prestatie, up to Elite) each awarded on conformation, movement, or proven performance at a keuring. The predicates aren't honorifics; they're a documented CV, and a mare's predicates directly affect her foals' value. An owner reads "Keur" or "Elite" the way someone else reads a degree class.

The Dutch system also runs in Britain: KWPN-UK holds keuringen each summer with judges flown in from the Netherlands, so British owners are plugged into the same grading culture rather than an anglicised version of it. At the elite end, KWPN dressage horses (Totilas, Glamourdale, Hermès and their kind) have shaped the top of the sport for two decades, and owners of more ordinary KWPN horses are acutely aware of standing in that lineage. The predicate, the direction, and the linear score are the vocabulary they think in.

Personalising for a KWPN owner

• Put the predicate on the gift. "Ster" or "Keur" beside the name on a name print reads as a real record to a KWPN keeper, not a decoration.
• Spell the studbook out properly. It's "KWPN", never "Dutch": the abbreviation is how owners refer to it themselves.
• Name the direction where it matters. A dressage-bred KWPN and a showjumping-bred one are different animals; reflecting the breeding direction shows you understand the register.
• Capture the movement. The elevated trot and broad topline are the breed's selling point, a canvas caught mid-passage shows what the horse is bred for.
• The off-season piece goes home. Like other competition warmbloods, the framed portrait tends to hang in the house as the trophy, not on the yard.
